Taking the test
The CDC says that everyone
should routinely be tested for HIV
by Herman Benjamin and Don Hill
You already know you need to get "The Test," but it's all so confusing when and how you should be tested.
Getting an HIV test should be as routine as a dental cleaning or a Pap smear. With state and federal testing regulations and policies changing, those considering a test may be receiving advice that can feel confusing.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that all adults should be tested for HIV at least once a year. Although experts agree with the CDC's recommendations, some are still unsure of the practicality. Some feel that, unlike other health checkups, HIV testing should be

personalized-based on each individual's risk factors.
This would mean that someone who has higher risk factors and possible exposure rates should be tested more often than annually.
According to the CDC, these recommendations are necessary because currently an estimated 250,000 Americans who are HIVpositive do not know they are infected. The testing effort is targeted to identify undiagnosed individuals, mostly populations with a disproportionate burden of HIV infection. If people are identified earlier through a screening program, those who test positive will have access to life extending therapy and preventative services that would help prevent transmission of HIV to others.
Another debate over testing relates to the reduction or elimination of pre-and posttest counseling whether such a move would eliminate an important opportunity to empower those testing negative with information about their individual risk behaviors.
While there are many concerns about testing, it's still important to make the decision to take the test. This is the first step in taking control of one's health and protecting the health of those around us.
The issue of testing will be publicly discussed on Wednesday, January 16, when the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland, hosts a Community Forum in their offices at 3210 Euclid Avenue. All interested persons are encouraged to attend to share their opinions on HIV testing policies, procedures, and other related concerns. For more information about the upcoming forum, please contact 216-621-0766.
Herman Benjamin is the Brother 2 Brother program coordinator of the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland, and Don Hill is the ManHealth program coordinator.
